SRI LANKA - Celebrating war victory and banning commemoration of dead civilians

Today, 18th June 2010, has been declared a public holiday by the government. Many Sri Lankans, especially Sinhalese from the South are expected to respond enthusiastically to the government's elaborate plans to celebrating the war victory over the LTTE. For several days, citizens in Colombo had to put up with closed roads in preparation. How much of our - citizens - tax payer's money will be spent for this celebration is something I don't know and dare not think.

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has expressed an urgent need to end caste-based discrimination. In an interview with The Nation on 26 October 2009, Navi Pillay, a former judge in South Africa, mentioned the need to create a new international convention that includes the explicit recognition of caste-based discrimination as a human rights violation. 

 
South Asia: A region of hunger

np_hunger_aug09_irin.jpgAccording to "2009 Global Hunger Index" by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) , South Asia has the highest regional Global Hunger Index (GHI) in the world. At an average index of 23, South Asia ranks higher than Sub-Saharan Africa which has an average index of 22. The institute highlighted 29 countries in the world that have levels of hunger that are alarming or extremely alarming. Three of these countries are Pakistan, India and Bangladesh.

INDIA - A step forward against discrimination: Same-sex relationship legalised

On 2 July 2009, the Delhi High Court made a judgment by legalising same-sex relationship between consenting adults. This is a great step forward against discrimination, bigotry and intolerance against this community.
