The 6th Session of Human Rights Council was an opportunity for Khmer Krom to meet with the High Commissioner for Human Rights. The Khmer Krom are an ethnic minority in Cambodia and Vietnam that have faced human rights violations for decades.

FORUM-ASIA joined some 200 human rights campaigners and activists on 31 August 2006 to address a "human rights crisis", marked by the spate of unresolved extrajudicial killings under the Arroyo government, and launch more efforts "to assert human rights for justice, development and peace". Nepal's Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala has expressed his full support for the unanimous resolution passed by the House of Representatives directing government to accede to the Rome Statute for the International Criminal Court (ICC) one month earlier. A group of Asian delegation, including FORUM-ASIA, was in Nepal on 26-27 August 2006 to conduct a series of visits to key government officials aimed to support the parliamentary directive. The group also held a one-day conference on the Rome Statute and the impact of accession to Nepal's legal system.

FORUM-ASIA together with its member organisation in Mongolia - Centre for Human Rights Development - organised the First Northeast Asia Human Rights Defenders' Forum (NEA-HRD) from 16-20 ugust 2006 in Ulaanbaatar. Themed "Promoting Economic, Social and Cultural Rights and the Right to Development : Stregthening the role of Human Rights Defenders in Northeast Asia", the forum conducted comparative reviews of human right situations in these countries and reflected on the role of civil society and human rights organisations. FORUM-ASIA recently participated in the 11th annual meeting of the Asia Pacific Forum of National Human Rights Institutions (APF) in Suva, Fiji from 31 July to 3 August 2006. There was an overall increase of non-governmental organisations participation at the event. FORUM-ASIA's Rashid Kang reports on the achievements and output of the activities in Fiji. |
