Joint Press Statement on the Murders of Two Indonesian Journalists

FORUM-ASIA and its members in Indonesia, the Indonesian Human Rights Monitor (Imparsial) and the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI), condemn the killings of Mr. Ardiansyah Matra'is and Mr. Ridwan Salamun, two journalists in Indonesia.

INDIA - Make it a reality: abolition of torture by law!

The Government of India has just got passed the Prevention of Torture Bill 2010 before the Lok Sabha (Lower House of Parliament) and is to introduce it in the Raja Sabha (Upper House) for its approval. The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) and its Indian member organisation, People's Watch, wish to point out that this Bill falls sharply short of expectations from the human rights community both from within and out side the country and urgently call upon the Government to immediately reconsider its present version of the Bill.

On the occasion of the first Asia-Pacific Regional Internet Governance Forum (APrIGF) Roundtable in Hong Kong on June 15-16, 2010, civil society representatives from eight Southeast Asian countries called on the Internet Governance Forum (IGF) and its Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Group (MAG) to fully uphold these aforementioned commitments and principles, as mandated by the United Nations Secretary-General.

hrc_una-uk.jpgThe UN Human Rights Council convened its organizational meeting yesterday on its fifth annual cycle (2010-2011) and elected Ambassador Sihasak Phuangketkeow, the Permanent Representative of Thailand to the UN Office and Other International Organizations in Geneva, as the President of the Council for a period of one year. We, the undersigned 55 national and regional human rights organizations across Asia, urge Ambassador Sihasak Phuangketkeow to demonstrate his utmost leadership and competency in order for the Council to fulfill its mandate and responsibilities effectively and ensure meaningful participation of NGOs.
