Brief HistoryAsian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) is a membership-based regional human rights organisation in Asia. Presently it has 46 member organisations across Asia. It was founded following a consultation among human rights and development non-governmental organisations in Asia in Manila on 17 December 1991. Its regional Secretariat has been located in Bangkok since 1994. FORUM-ASIA has strived to empower people by advocating social justice, sustainable human development, participatory democracy, gender equality, peace and human security through collaboration and cooperation among human rights organisations in the region. As one of the leading organisations in the regional platform, FORUM-ASIA seeks to facilitate dialogue, capacity-building and networking among human rights defenders, civil society actors and organisations in Asia to achieve a full realisation of all the human rights and human development in the region. FORUM-ASIA has obtained the Consultative Status with the ECOSOC (UN Economic and Social Council) since 2004. For the betterment of people's lives and the full respect of human dignity, the organisation promotes cooperation among governments, inter-governmental organisations and the UN. |
