Mongolia establishes moratorium on executions of death penalty PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 29 January 2010
Mongolia's president Elbegdorj Tsakhia imposed a moratorium on the death penalty on 14 January 2010. Human rights organisations welcomed this remark, as a step toward abolishment of executions.

In a statement the president said, "If Mongolia declares a moratorium on the execution of capital punishment, and eventually, becomes a country free of the death penalty, Mongolia's Good Name and Fame will further be enhanced" (To read his complete statement, please click here [The Office of the President of Mongolia website]) .

Imposing moratorium was one of the recommendations by Manfred Nowak, Special Rapporteur on torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, after his visit to the country in 2005.
