Joint Press Statement on the Murders of Two Indonesian Journalists

ASEAN labour ministers to foster closer cooperation with civil society

asean.jpgConcluding the ASEAN Labour Ministerial Meeting in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, eleven ministers expressed that they will "foster closer cooperation" with civil society organisations. Their communique below, issued on 24 May 2010, further noted such cooperation will promote "decent work providing the foundation of sustained economic growth, shared prosperity and social progress in ASEAN."

 
BURMA - Denounce the sham elections and refuse its result!

It has been endorsed by over 160 organisations worldwide. The campaign calls on the international community to "denounce the military's sham elections and call for real democratic change."

 
CHINA - Hundreds protest "unfair rulings" outside of Supreme People's Court

On the morning of May 21, an estimated 500 residents from across Beijing gathered outside of the Supreme People's Court to protest against what they believed to be unjust rulings by district courts in the city. The protestors called for better oversight of the lower courts and the protection of citizens' rights by the judicial system.
 
MALAYSIA - Rohingya refugees face challenges of inhumanity

Arakan Rohingya Refugee Committee (ARRC) in Malaysia issued the press release below on 24 May 2010, expressing concerns over the crises the Rohingya refugees and asylum seekers in Malaysia are facing. They are not receiving enough health care and many are passing lives in critical situation.

SRI LANKA - Celebrating war victory and banning commemoration of dead civilians

Today, 18th June 2010, has been declared a public holiday by the government. Many Sri Lankans, especially Sinhalese from the South are expected to respond enthusiastically to the government's elaborate plans to celebrating the war victory over the LTTE. For several days, citizens in Colombo had to put up with closed roads in preparation. How much of our - citizens - tax payer's money will be spent for this celebration is something I don't know and dare not think.
