SOUTH KOREA - UN expert notes diminishing space for freedom of expression

frank_la_rue.jpgAt the end of his 12-day country mission, UN Special Rapporteur Frank La Rue noted that the Republic of Korea has come a long way since the restoration in 1987 of a multi-party political system. However, he expressed concern that "since the candlelight demonstrations, the full respect for human rights, and in particular the right to freedom of opinion and expression, has been diminishing." Mr. La Rue indicated that this situation is "primarily due to new and more restrictive interpretations and application of existing laws."

 
THAILAND - Stop the crackdown on civilians!

Gathered in South Korea for the Gwangju Asia Forum, 566 individuals have endorsed the statement below condemning "the brute force used by the Thai security force against civilian protesters." The participants commemorated the courage of people who stood up against the military dictatorship in South Korea thirty years ago.

SRI LANKA - Celebrating war victory and banning commemoration of dead civilians

Today, 18th June 2010, has been declared a public holiday by the government. Many Sri Lankans, especially Sinhalese from the South are expected to respond enthusiastically to the government's elaborate plans to celebrating the war victory over the LTTE. For several days, citizens in Colombo had to put up with closed roads in preparation. How much of our - citizens - tax payer's money will be spent for this celebration is something I don't know and dare not think.
