Joint Press Statement on the Murders of Two Indonesian Journalists

UN: Countries seeking election fail to meet membership standards

Candidates for the United Nations Human Rights Council should meet the standards for council membership even when running unopposed, a global coalition of human rights organizations said today.  The General Assembly resolution that established the council states that members shall uphold the "highest standards" of human rights, but at least five of the candidates in this year's election fall short of that threshold, the coalition said.
 
NGOs condemn Australia for rejecting asylum seekers

Asia Pacific Refugee Rights Network (APRRN) and other NGOs condemned the Australian government's decision to suspend its processing of all applications for asylum from individuals from Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, for three and six months respectively. Here is the statement, issued on 1 May 2010.

SRI LANKA - Celebrating war victory and banning commemoration of dead civilians

Today, 18th June 2010, has been declared a public holiday by the government. Many Sri Lankans, especially Sinhalese from the South are expected to respond enthusiastically to the government's elaborate plans to celebrating the war victory over the LTTE. For several days, citizens in Colombo had to put up with closed roads in preparation. How much of our - citizens - tax payer's money will be spent for this celebration is something I don't know and dare not think.
