India will undergo its third cycle of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on 04 May 2017. Civil society has been an integral part of this process with 72 stakeholders’ submissions, and the web cast of the proceedings will be viewed in more than 50 areas across the country. During the second cycle of the UPR, 169 recommendations were made, most of which remain unfulfilled. There is much expectation that the government of India should implement all outstanding recommendations as well as those made in this cycle of the UPR. In this side event, prominent members of Indian civil society will analyse the review that will take place on 4th May and the recommendations made. They will attempt to examine this against the situation on the ground, as well as highlight recommendations that require the urgent attention of the government. Topics to be discussed include shrinking civil society space, threats against human rights defenders, freedom of expression, torture, extrajudicial executions, LGBTI rights, and economic, social and cultural rights.
