As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to unfold and the number of cases continue to rise, civic space and the standard of human rights in Southeast Asia have deteriorated.

In conjunction with the 36th ASEAN Summit, civil society is carving out a space for themselves to convene, assess the human rights situation in Southeast Asia and amplify their voices on matters of concern to the region.

Along with several partners, FORUM-ASIA is proud to present the ASEAN Community Virtual Summit. A digital press conference will be organised as part of the virtual summit.

Digital Press Conference: Protecting Human Rights and Democracy During the COVID-19 Pandemic

At the press conference, human rights organisations working in the region will present their demands and recommendations to ASEAN on how to place human rights at the center of their response to the pandemic. Panelists will focus on issues around restrictions on civic space and democracy, protection of those in the most vulnerable situations, and the plight of Rohingya refugees. The press conference is open to public.
