The Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO) will hold its 23rd General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 to 7 December. This triennial assembly will elect the president of the conference and the 20 member organisations of the Board of CONGO, and review its activities since the last assembly.

The Conference of NGOs in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations (CONGO) will hold its 23rd General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, from 5 to 7 December. This triennial assembly will elect the president of the conference and the 20 member non-governmental organisations (NGOs) of the Board of CONGO, and review its activities since the last assembly to prepare the recommendations for the future.

Anselmo Lee, the Executive Director of FORUM-ASIA, will attend the assembly, along with other representatives of about 500 CONGO member organisations.

The theme for this assembly is “Moving from consultation to partnership in promoting rights and responsible governance at all levels”. The assembly includes discussions relating to reform efforts of the United Nations and NGOs. The participants are also expected to focus on future plans, as both the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and CONGO will welcome their 60th anniversary in 2008.

CONGO is a membership-based association of non-governmental organisations. Founded in 1948, CONGO has worked to ensure NGOs’ presence at governments’ discussion at the United Nations and to facilitate NGOs’ discussions. NGOs with full CONGO membership status include national, regional and international organisations in consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
