its southern province, on 12 December 2009 for blessings for action to

Kiula is a small agro/fishing village with about 2000 people in the
deep South of Sri Lanka. It borders the Kalametiya lagoon and a bird
sanctuary that is recognized by the IUCN to be a most biologically
diverse one in the region. The threat of climate change will have
immense negative impact on the sanctuary and the lives of the people of
the village. The people in Kalametiya village are all Buddhists. The
temple of the village is the centre of its day to day life and the
inspirational centre. The way Buddhist give blessings and call for
action among other ways is through meditation and lighting of coconut
oil lamps. The event will see a meditation session, a sermon by a monk
on global warming, its impact and the Buddhist way of life in shunning
greedy ways and the lighting of 500 oil lamps, led by the Chief monk
